Gettysburg, PA: Brookdale Family Campground Owners Tim and Robyn Chilson of Meadville PA won Best Centennial Celebration in the state of Pennsylvania at the December Pennsylvania Campground Owners Convention (PCOA). Brookdale Family Campground in Meadville, PA celebrated 100 years of RVing with the Tin Can Tourists and Boyers RV on June 5th, 2010.
The Tin Can Tourists are a group of Vintage RV’s and (some) vintage tow vehicles which are touring across Pennsylvania on Route 6, in June. They hosted an open house with their vintage RV’s on display along with new RV’s from Boyer’s RV Sales in Erie. This provided campers and visitors a look back in history at the RV’s of yesteryear and provided them a direct comparison and contrast to the ultra modern RV’s of today!
According to owner Tim Chilson, the event was well attended by both campers and the general public. “We’ve received multiple Facebook comments, emails, and verbal comments on how much fun it was seeing these very rare, and in some cases, one of a kind RV’s.” Chilson added, “Many of the RV’s in the Tin Can Tourists Club have been featured on TV programs about vintage RV’s. Some pre-dated the first Airstreams, as the first riveted RV, and another was a 1938 International and 1936 Curtiss Aerocar. It’s the only one in existence with one of the first 5th wheel setups. The RV’s were all unique and listening to their owner’s stories about restoring them was as equally interesting and informative!” Chilson stated. “I personally learned a great deal about the evolution of RVing. I hope that as they travelled across Rt. 6 that people took the time and make the effort to go see them. They are something you just don’t want to miss!”
Chilson went on to add, “We want to thank our sponsor’s, Boyer’s RV and The Crawford County Visitor’s Bureau for partnering with us to put together a unique event in honor of RVing’s 100th Anniversary! This event sure pleased our campers and it was an honor having the Tin Can Tourists visit our campground and to have Boyer’s display their new RV’s here as well.”
“Thanks to our sponsors, The Tin Can Tourists were treated to a private dinner at an Amish farm while staying at Brookdale.” Chilson added. The campground often arranges dinners for large groups and clubs camping with them. Chilson stated that, “Dining at an Amish home is a unique experience that is available at only selected places. We’re fortunate to have such an opportunity available to us and it’s our pleasure to be able to share that with cubs staying with us. It makes visiting Brookdale a very unique experience for a club campout.”
